About the course

SJHWebdesigns offers a 20 week course which teaches the fundamental concepts in web design, authoring and implementation using a combination of hand-coding and graphical editors including Dreamweaver and Photoshop. The course leads to an EDCC accredited certificate in Advanced Web Authoring.

The next course is due to start in early 2010.

Topics:

  • HTML fundamentals: markup and basic text formatting
  • Using Cascading Style Sheets to apply formatting and layout to a page
  • Web graphics: file formats and image optimisation
  • W3C and web standards: accessibility, validation, platform and browser compatibility
  • Publishing a site: site organisation and structure; uploading with FTP; search engine optimisation and submission.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Create web pages using hand-coded HTML and CSS
  • Edit pages and create sites using Dreamweaver
  • Create basic web-optimised graphics
  • Create and publish a simple website

Method of assessment:

Students will complete EDCC assessments in Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Web Authoring. The assessments are taken as and when students are ready to attempt them. See the EDCC website for more details on the assessments.

Admission Criteria

No experience of web design is necessary, however applicants should:

  • be familiar with Windows operating systems
  • be prepared to work on their own initiative
  • be prepared to attend all classes

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the course, students must be:

  • Currently using mental health services
  • Resident in the borough of Camden
  • Aged 18-65

How to apply

If you are interested in applying, please come to one of our taster classes. These will be held shortly before the start of the course and will run from 10am to 1pm. The session will provide a small sample of what will be taught on the course.
